Most Child Porn Are Found On Image Hosting Services

According to a new report from the United Kingdom based Internet Watch Foundation, most of the child pornography material could be found hidden away on image hosting websites, mostly located in the United States. Vocativ made this statement in their article about the Internet Watch Foundation’s work:

”The IWF, a non-profit largely funded by the European Union and online companies, including internet service providers, social networks, and trade organizations, runs a hotline for reports of suspected child porn and employs analysts that seek this stuff out. They then notify law enforcement and, at least for content hosted in the U.K., issue takedown requests.”

IWF’s report shows pretty interesting metrics. For example, by the country where child porn is hosted, the USA is the first with 57 percent, then comes Europe behind with 41 percent and other countries with the remaining. This information shows that the data is actually hosted on physical servers, not necessarily where the images were created.

According to the report, most of the material is hosted on websites where admins let users to freely upload content. Metrics from 2015 shows that IWF found 53,218 child porn URLs on image hosting sites. Cyberlockers were the second biggest category with 6965 domains. Cyberlockers are password protected file hosting services. The two are followed by banner websites and social networking sites, web archives, and redirectors, domains forwarding visitors from one URL to a different one with under 1,000 cases each.

The report also shows a huge rise in child pornography. According to the researchers, there has been an increase by 417 percent in minor sexual abuse since 2013, however, those were just cases where child pornography was suspected. Last year, 68,092 cases were confirmed as online child porn, which is an 118 percent increase from 2014. The report may show bigger figures at 2015 since the group only began working actively on the case from last year.

The researchers only found just 51 websites hosting child porn material within proxy networks (including the dark web) in 2014, compared to 79 in 2015.

  1. And, this is a choice for TLAs/LE and society, in general; do you want these sick pedo bastards posting their sick, nefarious garbage on the clearnet, where everyone in the World can see it, or in the darknet, where only a few can see it? I think that the latter is far preferable.

  2. “there has been an increase by 417 percent in minor sexual abuse since 2013”

At first I thought those were abused kids, then I realized in the report it says “417%
increase in reports of child sexual abuse imagery in two years, 2013 to 2015” The increase is in people downloading pictures, not of new kids being abused. Big difference.

Another interesting trend from the report is the percent of kids under 10 is a lot lower from previous years. I wonder what’s causing the shift.

55,000 images is a much lower estimate than what I’d expected to hear. Everytime a pedo site gets busted they talk about 100,000+ users, so I would have assumed there’d at least be that many out there. I know they inflate user numbers during busts to make the bust sound even bigger but I still thought the situation was worse than it really is. Also shocked to see boy child abuse was single digit, I don’t know why but I thought it would be closer to an even distribution.

The hosted in America stat wasn’t shocking. People would be amazed at the number of ISIS terror sites that are hosted on US servers.

  3. They think the 271% increase in teens and the drop in preteens is because of webcams. Their website also mentions because preteens are reporting perverted adults more and they know other adults will listen if they report abuse. A lot of money has gone into teaching kids age 2 and older to speak up if they or someone they know is being abused.

Yeah the 55,000 number sounds big when you don’t think about it. Then when you do you realize like any non-porn website some pics will be reposts, probably scams, and maybe even from the FBI if they’re doing another sting operation like PlayPen or TLZ.

From now until the end of earth this and all other child abuse or war on drug organizations will make the statistics worse and worse every year regardless of what is really happening. They need things to look bad so people will donate. They don’t want people to think, just open their wallet and throw money at their organization, because more money this year will solve the problem better then it did last year, and the year before, and the year before, and…
